Why did Drake get Boo'd at Flog Gnaw?
Mystery Headliners, the enigma that is Frank Ocean, and a bad play by Tyler
Drake, one of the most successful artists of our generation, got boo’d off stage at the end of Camp Flog Gnaw. Here’s a clip, where you literally can hear people chanting “We want Frank!”:
What’s Flog Gnaw?
Started from the ground up 8 years ago, Tyler, the Creator and Odd Future started Flog Gnaw Festival. based after the group’s name Wolf Gang (into Golf Wang,,, then finally inverted into Flog Gnaw) Known for their provocative and aggressive release of music from the Odd Future tapes, Goblin, virality from songs like Yonkers and She.
I remember in 8th grade watching tyler win Best New Artist and it actually blew my mind. Tyler’s changed A LOT since then showing his softer side and dealing with his sexuality through Flower Boy and now with his latest release Igor - his most mainstream success.
Now Flog Gnaw’s a place filled with bucket hats, golf merch, checkered vans, and remotely anything that looks like this:
Why did people think it was Frank Ocean?
Everyone thought it was Frank Ocean, by everyone I mean all my friends, every stranger we asked, and of course, me too. Most people thought this due to a few things. Frank Ocean’s been hinting at a larger project this year through recent singles, DHL and In My Room. A 13 song project unveiled at his friend’s festival would be a pretty smart move, right? Frank Ocean also was an original member of Odd Future. And Frank is notorious for never playing live. The last time he played was 2 years ago, so he seemed due for a resurgence.
Still no excuse to be boo’ing Drake yet? Here’s were the problem comes in.
Tyler’s “???” Set up
The stage was flooded. No room to even breathe, all my friends and I were crushed even being plenty of distance away from the main stage. Everyone at the entire festival ground was in anticipation for who the “???”. Then the final moment arrived, Tyler stepped out and asked a leading question, “Mind if I bring out a few of my friends?” At this point the crowd is going crazy, it’s not just one artist.
First, ASAP Rocky came out, from what I could see everyone was enjoying it - people starting rushing forward. My friends and I were still a little disappointed since just ASAP alone wouldn’t have been satisfactory. (I know entitled) Then after 2 songs, Tyler brought out Lil Uzi Vert, who went on to just play 2 songs as well.
Tyler again asked, “Can I bring out another friend?” Not mentioning that this is the last act of the night. No mention that this artist should be treated differently than ASAP and Uzi. When he came out it was hype:
it took a turn for the worse after Drake said, “I know I’m only supposed to play 2 songs, do you guys want more?” After playing around 6ish songs, the front - who definitely camped out for Frank Ocean started acting embarrassing and entitled. In the back, we were very confused when it abruptly ended a full 20 mins before it was supposed to. Drake or Tyler should have been more explicit that Drake was the last act.
In the end, those people weren’t mad that it was Drake and not Frank Ocean. They just made it seem like there was more after Drake, and it seemed like he was hogging the stage, which prompted this.
Anyways, catch me at Coachella, camping in the front for (possibly) Frank Ocean. Flog Gnaw will survive if they can get a sort out their line-up and not be sketchy with a “???.” Drake will be fine, I’m sure everyone is pity-streaming him today so he can cash in another check.
Tylers’ reaction:
He tweeted a LOT more after this, go check it out:
